Fixed Retainers in North Sydney and Central Coast

Orthodontic treatment is definitely a journey where the destination is the most exciting part!

Once your treatment is finished, it’s not only important to maintain the health of your teeth with a good oral hygiene routine, it’s also vitally important to remember that your teeth can still move. This is why we fit each of our patients with a fix retainer, so that your beautifully straight smile stays that way.

What is a fixed retainer?

Upper lingual wireA fixed retainer simply consists of a wire that is designed individually to fit the back of your newly straight teeth and then permanently bonded to them. Because the retainer is permanently bonded to the teeth, there is no chance of you misplacing it or forgetting to wear it. The fixed retainer is invisible from the outside and extremely minimal and won’t inhibit your ability to speak. These retainers will do exactly what their namesake suggests; retain all of the orthodontic work you went through to achieve your beautiful smile.

How do I care for my fixed retainer?

Your retainer will be bonded to the inside of the teeth and therefore must be carefully cleaned each day in order to prevent the build-up of plaque and calculus. The professionals at Coombe Orthodontists will provide all of the information you need in order to maintain your oral health after your fixed retainer has been fitted. It is important that you continue to floss after your treatment is finished, and the fixed retainers are designed so you can. This helps reduce gingivitis and maintain your beautiful, healthy smile.

How long do I need to wear the fixed retainer?

The short answer to this question is; you need to wear your fixed retainer as long as you want to keep your teeth straight. Once it has been fixed to the back of your teeth it will only take a couple of days to get used to, and after a while you won’t even know it’s there. If you suffer from any breakages or movement in the wire, it is important that you come back and visit us so that we can fix the retainer before any tooth-movement starts to take place.

Unlike removable retainers which can be lost, damaged or forgotten, fixed retainers don’t rely upon compliance; they will always do their job. That way, you can always keep your beautifully straight smile!
