Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and having beautifully straight teeth can have a positive impact on your oral health.
Why straighten your teeth?
Straight teeth offer more than just an aesthetic benefit, they can actually help you to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. Having crooked teeth can often make it difficult to brush and floss properly, as there are so many hard to reach places. This means there is a greater likelihood of plaque build-up and the patient can ultimately suffer from things like tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease. When teeth are correctly aligned, it can also help with bite problems, such as overbites and underbites, which can have an impact on chewing ability and function of speech. Aside from these health benefits, braces also have a great cosmetic impact by creating beautifully straight smiles. Having straight teeth can increase your inclination to smile which helps in social and professional settings.
How do braces work?
Braces involve small brackets, made from stainless steel, that are permanently attached to each tooth for the duration of the treatment. A wire is used to connect each of these brackets and exerts a gentle pressure over a period of time to gradually move the teeth into a straighter alignment. In order for the wire to stay in place, we use small o-rings that sit over the wire and brackets. These o-rings come in a variety of colours, ranging from clear to brightly coloured. Your o-rings will be changed every time you come to visit us, so you can customise them, perhaps you could have red and green for Christmas, or you could even represent your favourite sports team! It’s all up to you.
When can I get braces?
Every individual case does vary, however the Australian Society of Orthodontists states that orthodontic issues usually present themselves at around seven years of age. At this point, it is a good idea to visit an orthodontist to pinpoint any potential issues so that they can be corrected early on. If you are an adult looking to enhance your smile, arrange an appointment with us and we will design a treatment plan and have you on the road to a great smile in no time.
