When it comes to the positioning of your upper and lower jaws, correct alignment is vitally important.
A misaligned jaw can cause an array of different problems for your teeth in the long run, so the issue should be dealt with sooner rather than later. We offer a range of orthopaedic appliance options at our Toukley and Wahroonga practices so that we can work to correct the alignment of your jaw.
The Twin Block is a removable orthodontic appliance that assists with correcting underdeveloped lower jaws, often referred to as an overbite. The appliance is made up of two separate plates that sit on the upper and lower teeth, which work to bring the bottom jaw forward. Though treatment times may vary, patients can expect to wear the Twin Block appliance for approximately 9 to 12 months. This particular appliance helps to correctly align the upper and lower jaws, however it will not straighten the teeth. This is why it is often considered an initial phase of treatment, which can be followed by other orthodontic treatments such as braces.
A Face mask appliance is used to improve the upper jaw position when it is positioned too far back relative to the lower jaw, which is more commonly referred to as an underbite. This particular appliance works best on patients who are between 7 and 10 years of age as the bones of the upper palate have not yet fused and are malleable enough to change position. Once the child reaches adolesce, it becomes increasingly difficult to shift the position of the lower jaw as it undergoes a forward growth spurt.
The face mask works by being attached to an expander that is permanently set in the mouth for the duration of the treatment. The face mask is attached with elastic rubber bands and should be worn 12 to 14 hours per day, usually over a period of 9 to 12 months. Most of our patients usually wear the face mask when they come home from school and overnight. The expander is used to widen the upper jaw to sit in a more suitable position in relation to the lower jaw.
Aside from the orthodontic benefit, the face mask can also have an impact on the outside appearance of the face and jaw, offering a more pleasing profile following treatment.
Your child’s teeth are entirely unique, which is why treatment should be specifically customised to suit their needs. We can combine different orthodontic appliances and treatments to achieve the desired result so that their smile will be aesthetically pleasing and functional for a lifetime.
